Effectiveness of Fall Prevention Education on Nurses' Compliance and Patient Safety Attitude: Experimental Study in Elderly

Falls become a challenge in elderly care in hospital and could result in severe injuries and also risk of morbidity. Two important elements in lowering the incidence of falls are nurses' compliance with fall prevention procedures and a positive attitude toward patient safety. The Fall Tailoring Intervention for Patient Safety (TIPS) toolkit, as an innovative tool, is created to raise nurses' awareness in putting fall prevention techniques into practice. This study aims to evaluate how well Fall TIPS toolkit prevents falls by influencing compliance and patient safety attitude. With a control group, this study used a quasi-experiment pre-post test design. Fifty-two nurses from the adult inpatient unit were split into two groups, intervention group and control group. Compliance and patient safety attitude data were collected using a questionnaire. Wilcoxon test showed no significant difference in nurse compliance before and after the intervention (p value>0.05), but there were significant differences in patient safety attitude (p value<0.05). In addition, the result of Mann-Whitney test indicates that there was a significant difference between the intervention and control groups in terms of compliance and patient safety attitude. It can be concluded that the Fall TIPS toolkit can be an effective solution to improve nurses' compliance and patient safety attitude.Keyword: Compliance, Elderly, Fall Prevention Education, Fall TIPS toolkit, Patient safety attitudeReferensi
