Abstract

Hermeneutics, as a discipline of text interpretation, has undergone significant development from ancient Greece to the present day, with Paul Ricoeur as a key figure in modern hermeneutical thought. This study aims to uncover the main concepts in Ricoeur's hermeneutics, including the role of symbolism, the hermeneutic approach to perfection, and the dialectic between understanding and being understood. Ricoeur emphasized the importance of understanding hidden meanings in texts through symbols that depict complex human experiences. Although Ricoeur's ideas are ideally applicable across various disciplines, their application often presents challenges, particularly in a pragmatic modern context. Furthermore, this study also discusses a comparison between Ricoeur's ideas and those of other hermeneutic figures, such as Hans-Georg Gadamer and Wilhelm Dilthey, as well as the criticisms that have arisen against his approach.
