Transformation of Social Behavior of Teenagers in the Social Media Era: Use of Whatsapp among Teenagers in Penyagun Village

Abstrak

The rapid development of social media has brought about major changes in social life, especially among teenagers. One of the most widely used social media is WhatsApp. This study aims to determine the impact of WhatsApp use on the social behavior of teenagers aged 12-17 years in Penyagun Village, Rangsang District, Meranti Islands Regency. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques through observation, interviews, and documentation. The results of the study indicate that (1) teenagers experience a high tendency and dependence on WhatsApp, which is used not only for communication but also for entertainment and the formation of social identity; (2) the use of WhatsApp has positive impacts such as ease of communication and group solidarity, but also negative impacts such as decreased direct social participation, decreased speaking ethics, and changes in lifestyle that are not in accordance with local values; and (3) there is a transformation of social behavior marked by shifts in interaction patterns, language styles, and decreased direct social interaction. This study implies the importance of the role of parents, schools, and the environment in providing digital education so that the use of social media supports the formation of positive adolescent character.
